After years of tension between Activision and Bungie, the two decided to part ways letting Bungie take full ownership and control over Destiny.
According from a blog post from Bungie:
"We have enjoyed a successful eight-year run and would like to thank Activision for their partnership on Destiny"
"Looking ahead, we're excited to announce plans for Activision to transfer publishing rights for Destiny to Bungie"
There are a lot of questions about what comes next for Destiny but Bungie says that the year 2 roadmap will still be followed for the game. The most notable change is that Destiny 3 will not arrive in Fall of 2020, given the Activision timeline of 2019 large fall DLC then Destiny 3 in 2020, although these information are yet to be confirmed by Bungie.
Destiny launched in September 2014 and suffered a dragging and rough terrain through expansions, updates and a sequel. The sequel was loved and positively accepted by its players but it failed to meet Activision's sales expectation stating, "Some of our franchises like Destiny are not performing well as we'd like". This was the week they gave Destiny 2 for free for PC players.
For the meantime, it appears to be business as usual for Destiny 2. Activision stated that the game will remaing on Blizzard's Battle.net. As for Bungie, they say that the transition is already on its early stages.
Bungie is not new from breaking away from big game publishers, in 2007, Bungie negotiated its independence from Microsoft.
